The UIF does more than cover unemployment. If you take time off to have a baby, recover from illness, adopt a child or care for a newborn, you may be able to claim a leave benefit to replace part of your income.
This calculator handles all four leave benefit types. Pick the one that applies to you, enter your salary and the number of days, and see an instant estimate of your daily and total benefit.

The four types of UIF leave benefit
Maternity benefit
Paid to mothers who take maternity leave. It is calculated at a flat 66% of your income and can be claimed for up to 121 days (about 17 weeks). You can start claiming up to four weeks before your due date.
Illness benefit
Paid if you are booked off sick for more than seven days and cannot work. It uses the same sliding-scale rate (38%–60%) as the unemployment benefit and is limited by your available credit days.
Adoption benefit
Paid to a parent who adopts a child under the age of two. It is calculated at 66% of your income for up to 10 weeks.
Parental benefit
Paid to a parent (often the father or second parent) for up to 10 consecutive days after the birth or adoption of a child, at a flat 66% of income.
How this UIF Calculator works out your leave benefit
The formula behind the UIF Calculator
Maternity, adoption and parental benefits use a flat replacement rate of 66% of your daily income. The illness benefit uses the same sliding scale as unemployment, so lower earners receive a higher percentage. This UIF Calculator applies each of those rules automatically based on the benefit type you choose.
As with all UIF benefits, only the first R17,712 of your monthly salary counts towards the calculation.
The calculator multiplies your daily benefit by the number of days you claim to give you a total. Remember that you cannot claim more days than the legal maximum for each benefit type.
Documents you will need
The exact paperwork depends on the benefit, but most leave claims require:
Your 13-digit South African ID or valid passport.
A completed application form (UI-2.3 for maternity, UI-2.2 for illness).
A UI-19 form from your employer confirming your employment details.
Proof of banking details on a UI-2.8 form.
A medical certificate or, for maternity, proof of the pregnancy or birth.
